Study programme at KHM

The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) was established in 1990. The challenging project-based study it offers brings together practices, theories, experiences and reflections from the fields of film and television, art and media theory, and art in one course: the “Media and Fine Art” diploma degree.
Between media, around media or without being defined by any medium in particular, the KHM creates a special experimental climate for independent, artistic work. The individual development of artistic projects, their guidance and reflexive appropriation, is at the core of the “Media and Fine Art” degree course. These projects are supported by the interdisciplinary supervision of professors, artistic and academic staff, and technicians. Student work takes place in the ateliers, studios and laboratories of the KHM, which are equipped with high-quality facilities, oriented to the wide variety of subjects taught.
The following study emphases and fields of action are to be understood as interchangeable and combinable examples:

•  Animation / 3D animation
•  Art and media theory
•  Art in public space / performance / mixed media
•  Art of networks and apparatus

•  Creative production / TV formats
/ live directing
•  Directing feature and documentary film
•  Experimental film / video art / installation
•  Image design / camera / montage
•  Photography

•  Scriptwriting / dramaturgy / writing

( I ) A three-semester fondation imparts the basics of theory and artistic practise. A six-semester main course concentrates on individual specialisations in artistic disciplines based in the teaching fields.

(II) The KHM offers direct access to the fifth semester to students with a degree from another art school or university or with the relevant practical experience. This foursemester course also leads to the award of an Academy of Media Arts Cologne diploma and is postgraduate in character. Specializing in disciplines ranges from, for example photography, feature film, documentary and experimental film, animation, video and light art, design, sound, scenography, experimental informatics, sculpture, art in public space and architecture to theory, aesthetics and the history of machines, the arts and the media.

The Academy of Media Arts Cologne diploma is comparable to a MFA (Master of Fine Arts ) degree.
